Foster Care & Family Permanence

The CHJC Foster Care Program provides both long and short-term services for youth unable to be cared for by their birth families or legal guardians.

• While receiving supportive care, counseling, and supervision, youth participating in the CHJC Foster Care Program are able to live within family homes, attend public schools, and be active members of their communities.
• Foster Families play a vital role in helping youth placed in their care achieve their goals.
• All prospective Foster Parents are required to complete a certification program, with trainings once a week for ten weeks. (See Below) 

National Training Development Curriculum (NTDC) – Traditional

Class 1- Introduction and Child Development

Class 2- Foster Care A Means to Support Families and Reunification

Class 3- Maintaining Children’s Connections and Attachment

Class 4- Separation, Grief, Loss and Trauma-Related Behaviors

Class 5- Trauma-Related Behaviors cont. and Trauma-Informed Parenting

Class 6- Cultural Humility and Parenting Racially Culturally Diverse Families

Week 7- Mental Health Considerations and Impact of Substance Use

Week 8- Parenting a Child with a History of Sexual Trauma and Effective Communication

Week 9- Preparing For Managing Intrusive Questions and Creating Stable Nurturing Safe Environments

Week 10- Panel and Connections with Birth Families After Adoption

• All prospective Kinship Parents are required to complete 4 classes. (See below)

Class 2- Kinship Parenting and Separation, Grief, Loss

Class 3- Trauma-Related Behaviors and Trauma-Informed Parenting

Class 4- Mental Health Considerations and Building Resilience for Kinship Caregivers

• To ensure a continuum of learning, once certified, Foster Parents are required to attend ongoing trainings.

CHJC is excited to announce a partnership with the NYS Office of Children and Family Services (OCFS), Treatment Foster Care (TFC), The House of Good Shepherd (HGS), and Berkshire Farm Center and Services for Youth.

CHJC’s Treatment Foster Care (TFC) is a unique, evidence-based approach developed as an alternative to institutional or group care.

TFC provides treatment within a foster care setting for youth with emotional and behavioral challenges who may not be successful in traditional foster care environments. These youth benefit from a specialized, individualized approach designed to meet their unique needs.

At its heart, TFC is about embracing youth who are at a crossroads and providing the support, structure, and care they need to move forward.

The Family Permanency Program (FPP) combines clinical expertise with linkages and connections to support services to create an environment for improved familial relationships.

Program Goals:

• Promote permanency for post-adoptive, post-guardianship,
  and kinship families
• Improve overall family functioning
• Improve access to critical community-based
  services
• Enhancing knowledge and understanding of child’s needs
